Hacks for Humanity – A 12-Year Journey of Social Innovation
Now in its twelfth year, Hacks for Humanity, organized by Project Humanities at Arizona State University, has become one of the most socially impactful hackathons in the United States. The event brings together innovators across disciplines to develop technology-driven solutions that serve humanity.
Origins of the Event

Launched in 2014, Hacks for Humanity was born from a simple idea: to use technology not just for profit but to solve pressing human issues. The event initially targeted students and faculty within ASU but quickly grew in scope, drawing national and even international participation due to its strong mission and meaningful impact.
What Makes It Unique
Unlike traditional hackathons, Hacks for Humanity emphasizes social ethics through its guiding framework—Humanity 101. Participants are encouraged to create solutions rooted in compassion, empathy, forgiveness, integrity, kindness, respect, and self-reflection. The goal is not only to build tech, but to build better communities.
The 2025 Edition
Hacks for Humanity 2025 will take place from October 10–12 at Arizona State University. With a focus on health, education, climate action, and social justice, this year’s competition is expected to produce groundbreaking, people-first projects.
